After three months of evaluations and tests, Switzerland-based Panalpina selected TSC’s TTP-2410M Series thermal-transfer printer for use in its global supply chain, a network of 500 offices in 80 countries employing 15,000 people. 

 

“The particular challenge is the structure of the company,” affirms Markus Igl from the Core Application Development Department at Panalpina in Switzerland. “We specialize in end-to-end supply chain management solutions as well as intercontinental air freight and ocean freight shipments. Our business can only operate utilizing state-of-the-art software. Every branch in the world is connected to our complex IT environment, where all components must cooperate optimally.” 

 

Within Panalpina’s supply chain network, printer and scanner systems are critical components. They identify shipments, gather and print relevant data on labels, and communicate with Panalpina’s computer network, which controls and optimizes internal data flows and external transit routes.

These features enable Panalpina to label every shipment based on the type of transportation and application. The requirements for labels used in air freight shipments are especially high because of the large temperatures fluctuations in aircraft storage bays. Beginning in 2002, WEWO Schrauben-Befestigungsteile, a German supplier of screws, nuts, shims, nails, rivets and clamps, began offering customers C-parts management solutions to help reduce their procurement and logistical costs. 

Based on the Kanban just-in-time scheduling system, WEWO’s c-parts service greatly simplifies the procurement of high-volume low-price commodities. Companies taking advantage of the system define specific parts required, which are then delivered just-in-time in precisely required quantities. This system streamlines the parts-ordering process and significantly reduces administrative and storage costs, allowing companies to concentrate on their core business. 

In the past, DPD, one of Europe’s leading B2B parcel delivery services, provided WEWO with semi-finished labels that employees would fill out with delivery information. Employees would then record the package tracking numbers and apply the labels manually, a time-consuming process. 

“With the older tracking system, which used dot matrix printers and continuous-form paper, our stuff did have a carbon copy from the international carrier or the journal from the driver, but, frankly, we really were not able to verify the performance of the delivery service,” said Frank Janssen, WEWO’s IT Manager. “It was difficult to monitor and control the delivery process. In some cases, we actually didn’t know which packages were delivered or when.” 

Working with TSC partner and Henning Mahlstedt, TSC’s Sales Director Northern Region, WEWO created a custom package-labeling system using TSC’s TTP-245C Series and TTP-247 Series label printers. 

After three months of analysis and evaluation, TSC’s TTP-245C thermal-transfer desktop printer was installed during the initial phase of the new package delivery system’s implementation. It operates reliably and failure free. At WEWO a 100 mm x 150 mm package label is printed every 30 seconds, while the 200 MHz 32-bit processor allows for an even faster label output. 

In addition, the TTP-247 Series thermal-transfer desktop printer was selected for WEWO’s new Kanban project, based largely on the fact that it uses resin ribbons that guarantee a long label lifespan. The thermal-transfer labels required for WEWO’s Kanban containers are produced by the TTP-247 Series at 177 mm per second at a 203 dpi resolution. 

By interfacing all tracking systems, it is now possible to access current information about the status of each delivery. All relevant information is available at a glance.

The TTP-245C Series features a print speed of up to 152 mm per second, making it ideal for low-to medium-volume printing. "In the beginning we did not realize the benefits of an integrated network adapter, but now we appreciate that we don’t need a print server," Janssen added. 

The thermal-transfer labels required for WEWO’s Kanban containers are produced by the TTP-247 Series. While the TTP-247 runs at an impressive 7 inches per second, printing up to 4 inches wide at 203 dpi resolution, the second model in the series, the TTP-345, offers high resolution 300 dpi printing at 5 inches per second. Both models feature a user-friendly clamshell design for easy drop-in media loading, along with a rugged double-wall design that is stronger and more durable than other thermal transfer mechanisms on the market.

Working under a contract with LTG KG, Andreas Laubner GmbH, a German supplier of label-printing systems and other automatic identification products, provides thermal printers that are used for warehouse logistics by John Deere, the world’s leading manufacturer of agricultural-equipment. 

The printers, which are mounted on warehouse forklifts, are used for labeling incoming and outgoing parts. Made from a variety of materials, the labels must withstand adverse climate conditions and hostile environments contaminated by dust and oil and subject to constant vibration. 

Initially, Andreas Laubner´s experts faced a big problem: The long-lasting labels required by LTG KG and John Deere could only be produced via thermal transfer printing, and mobile in-vehicle printers at the time were based on direct thermal printing technology. They needed to find a thermal transfer printer that would meet the contract requirements.

After evaluating numerous printers, Andreas Laubner selected the TTP-245C series thermal transfer printer from TSC. Using a standard-size holder, the space-saving high-performance desktop printers are fitted onto forklifts and other vehicles used at the John Deere warehouse. 

Magnetic feet on the holders ensure a safe, non-slip grip. To stabilize the printer and protect it from the vibration during everyday operation, a shock absorber plate and special spring are installed. The vibration-tolerant holder also guarantees the connection to the SAP system when the fork lift is on the move. 

Using its integrated USB 2.0 interface, the TTP-245C can easily be connected to a fork lift’s communications terminal. The printers also are equipped with a roaming-compatible WLAN print server. German trading company Krapp Eisen found that pallets, cartons, sacks and other loading aids were often forgotten during loading, a problem that was mainly the result of the goods receipt team and the consignment team placing required contents into shipment boxes independently of each other. 

To solve the problem, Kapp Eisen decided to implement a new auto ID solution in which loading aids would be marked uniquely with an order label, thus reducing the loading error rate. The company also took steps to increase the legibility of labels, especially its small 55 x 40 mm (2.2 x 1.5 in) labels and its wax-coated labels printed outdoors. 

After a thorough evaluation, Krapp Eisen selected TSC’s TTP-245C thermal transfer printer for deployment at 10 strategic locations at the company’s central warehouse in Lohne and at outdoor sites. New detachable 102 x 152 mm (4 x 6 in) labels containing a unique barcode, the customer’s address, the name of the person in charge at Krapp Eisen, and other shipment information are now printed on order labels to eliminate loading errors.

Despite the plant-wide installation of an advanced closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, a Korean logistics company was continuing to have trouble monitoring and tracking its product inventory, resulting in far too many lost items. The losses proved to be very costly, forcing the company to reimburse customers $500,000 to $1 million in damages annually. The ongoing problem was also a source of internal friction, with many staff members refusing to accept responsibility or shifting the blame. 

To address the problem, the company decided to install a video goods trace (VGT) system that includes TSC’s TDP-244 barcode printer, a digital video recorder (DVR), CCTV camera, personal digital assistant (PDA), and a switch alarm. The TDP-244 is used to print the package labels affixed to each shipping carton. When delivering goods, operators scan the box label with their PDA. The tracking number is then displayed onscreen and stored in the PDA’s database. 

To find a missing item, an employee can key its tracking number into the system, which then traces via video capture where it traveled and on which truck. With the aid of tracking numbers and the video trace, the logistics company is able to locate lost goods within 1 second, while quickly pinpointing areas where items went missing. The result: a dramatic reduction in lost items and compensation costs.

Every day MOBO Druck receives many print orders in form of variable data records from its clients. Particularly for Germany’s deposit system, enormous information data of a clearing company required needs to be captured as soon and meticulously as possible because it is very important where the bottle deposit is collected and where it is paid. When the used deposit bottles have been returned to the shops and supermarkets, that are not using reverse vending machines, they are transported in big plastic bags to counting centres. The European headquarter of Taiwan Semiconductor, located in Zorneding near Munich, Germany, as usually, provides customers, interested partners and distributors with a chance to evaluate and test specific products before making a purchase. The sensitive high quality products such as diodes, bridge rectifiers, MOSFETs, transistors, analog and lighting ICs or linear voltage or switching regulators, for example, are packed safely and delivered as single units or complete sample boxes to the recipients. Such product samples are also sent in the case of special promotion activities. The orders are processed on an up-to-date delivery list, and all relevant data and reports are captured in the internal system and available for sales and customer service in real time and on demand. 

Previously, address labels, along with identification labels for sample boxes and individually packed plastic bags, were produced by hand, a time-consuming, cumbersome process. To speed up its labling operation, Taiwain Semiconductor decided to deploy three high-powered TSC printer models: the TTP-345, TTP-243E Pro and ME240. The TTP-345 is used to create self-adhesive labels for plastic bags containing individually packed smaller components. Each 80 mm x 40 mm label contains a product barcode, component name and designation, item quantity and company data. Printed at 300 dpi, the high-resolution image is easily readable by the human eye and by a barcode scanner. Address labels, which have dimensions of 80 mm x 100 mm, are printed with the TTP-243E Pro. And TSC's high-performance industrial ME240 printer is used to create DIN A5 format labels, which are affixed to sample boxes.

The 4“ wide thermal transfer desktop printer TTP-247 series offers a user friendly clamshell design with a large 5” OD center biased media capacity. While TTP-247 features 203 dpi resolution and print speeds up to 7 inches per second, the 300 dpi TTP-345 is ideal for 2-D barcodes, fine text and small graphics labeling. Top of form sensing by gap, black mark, or notch is standard and completely adjustable from side to side. 

TSC’s entry-level TTP-243 Pro desktop printer series consist of three models, including economy printer TTP-243E Pro, that offers a resolution of 203 dpi and print speed of 3 ips. One of the key features is its innovative dual-motor print engine, which incorporates a 32 bit high performance processor that can handle high volumes of data without sacrificing throughput. The TTP-243 Pro holds up to 8.4 inch OD label rolls and has a ribbon capacity of 300 meters. It also features two standard interfaces – RS-232 serial and USB 2.0. 

The ME240 series features a small footprint and low profile design that fits where larger industrial printers do not. The printers all-metal construction and die-cast aluminum print mechanism engine is durable enough to withstand the toughest production environments and to handle 450 meter ribbons. Standard features include USB and Serial connectivity, a 2-button 3-LED (basic model)/ 6-button LCD (advanced model) control panel 3-button LED display, Real Time Clock, 8 MB SDRAM memory and 4 MB Flash memory. Print resolution is 203 dpi, print speed 6 ips.
