MARKET:
Logistics & Transportation Industry

APPLICATION:
Supply Chain

MODEL:
TTP-2410M

Mission:
After three months of evaluations and tests, Switzerland-based Panalpina selected TSC’s TTP-2410M Series thermal-transfer printer for use in its global supply chain, a network of 500 offices in 80 countries employing 15,000 people.

“The particular challenge is the structure of the company,” affirms Markus Igl from the Core Application Development Department at Panalpina in Switzerland. “We specialize in end-to-end supply chain management solutions as well as intercontinental air freight and ocean freight shipments. Our business can only operate utilizing state-of-the-art software. Every branch in the world is connected to our complex IT environment, where all components must cooperate optimally.”

Within Panalpina’s supply chain network, printer and scanner systems are critical components. They identify shipments, gather and print relevant data on labels, and communicate with Panalpina’s computer network, which controls and optimizes internal data flows and external transit routes.

Benefits:
With its rugged aluminum casing, fast print speed and 600-dp resolution, the TTP-2410M proved to be the ideal printer solution for Panalpina, offering the fastest label output of any printer in its class.

"Besides print speed and resolution, compatibility was a decisive factor in its selection, as was its affordable price and the high level of support offered by TSC", said Markus Igl, whose Core Application Development Department is responsible for testing all products that are eventually adopted for use worldwide by Panalpina.

Since 2009, TSC’s TTP-2410M thermal-transfer label printers have been installed in transit and distribution warehouses and office locations, and are capable of producing high-data-density barcode labels at high speeds, while maintaining optimum print quality.

The label printers support one- and two-dimensional barcodes, including PDF-417, Maxicode, DataMatix and QR Code formats, and accommodate ribbons up to 600 meters long and label rolls with an outer diameter of up to 208.3 mm. They also support both peel-off and batch-mode printing.

"For all these reasons, we chose TSC’s high-performance TTP-2410M printers and have recommended them to all our businesses worldwide," said Igl. "The support from TSC has been exceptional, with specialists from the company helping us define the optimal print speed for each application to prevent any problems with print quality."
The TTP-2410M’s print quality, high memory capacity, PS/2 keyboard interface, and internal Ethernet, USB 2.0, Centronics, RS-232 and PS/2 connectivity were determining factors in its selection by Panalpina.

These features enable Panalpina to label every shipment based on the type of transportation and application. The requirements for labels used in air freight shipments are especially high because of the large temperatures fluctuations in aircraft storage bays. Such labels must meet very rigid IATA regulations, said Igl.

Another attractive feature of the TTP-2410M is its ease of handling. The ribbons and print media can be replaced easily by any onsite employee.

"TSC Auto ID and distributor Barcodat from Dornstetten are reliable partners that delivered the ideal printer for our requirements at a very low price," said Igl. "Furthermore, they offer great support, which is absolutely essential for the proprietary and very complex topology network of a large service provider such as Panalpina."

TSC TTP-2410M thermal-transfer barcode printer features:
TSC’s new TTP-2410M die-cast aluminum label printer is designed to meet the most demanding bar-coding and identification requirements, offering more standard features than any comparable printer—at a very affordable price.

TSPL-EZ™ features internal scalable True Type fonts, along with a BASIC interpreter with file manager for creating powerful printer-interface applications with multiple host types.

History of Panalpina
Panalpina’s history is closely linked with Rhine shipping. In 1935, the fledgling business consortium began to focus its attention on the shipping industry. During the 1940s, the group of companies formed a transatlantic network, and in 1954 began operating worldwide under the name of Panalpina. In the 1970s, the group benefited from Nigeria’s booming oil business, which catapulted Panalpina into a position as the leading supply-chain company for the oil and gas industry.

Today, the logistics requirements of the company’s global activities are immense. The success of the business depends not only on on-time delivery, but also on meeting the specific regulations of every country.
WEWO Schrauben-Befestigungsteile GmbH improves delivery-process efficiency with TSC printing solutions
MARKET:
Medium-size industrial companies
APPLICATION:
Custom package labeling system
MODEL:
TTP-245C Series TTP-247 Series

Background:
Beginning in 2002, WEWO Schrauben-Befestigungsteile, a German supplier of screws, nuts, shims, nails, rivets and clamps, began offering customers C-parts management solutions to help reduce their procurement and logistical costs.
Based on the Kanban just-in-time scheduling system, WEWO’s c-parts service greatly simplifies the procurement of high-volume low-price commodities. Companies taking advantage of the system define specific parts required, which are then delivered just-in-time in precisely required quantities. This system streamlines the parts-ordering process and significantly reduces administrative and storage costs, allowing companies to concentrate on their core business.
In the past, DPD, one of Europe’s leading B2B parcel delivery services, provided WEWO with semi-finished labels that employees would fill out with delivery information. Employees would then record the package tracking numbers and apply the labels manually, a time-consuming process.
“With the older tracking system, which used dot matrix printers and continuous-form paper, our stuff did have a carbon copy from the international carrier or the journal from the driver, but, frankly, we really were not able to verify the performance of the delivery service,” said Frank Janssen, WEWO’s IT Manager. “It was difficult to monitor and control the delivery process. In some cases, we actually didn’t know which packages were delivered or when.”
Solution:
Working with TSC partner and Henning Mahlstedt, TSC’s Sales Director Northern Region, WEWO created a custom package-labeling system using TSC’s TTP-245C Series and TTP-247 Series label printers.
After three months of analysis and evaluation, TSC’s TTP-245C thermal-transfer desktop printer was installed during the initial phase of the new package delivery system’s implementation. It operates reliably and failure free. At WEWO a 100 mm x 150 mm package label is printed every 30 seconds, while the 200 MHz 32-bit processor allows for an even faster label output.
In addition, the TTP-247 Series thermal-transfer desktop printer was selected for WEWO’s new Kanban project, based largely on the fact that it uses resin ribbons that guarantee a long label lifespan. The thermal-transfer labels required for WEWO’s Kanban containers are produced by the TTP-247 Series at 177 mm per second at a 203 dpi resolution.
By interfacing all tracking systems, it is now possible to access current information about the status of each delivery. All relevant information is available at a glance.
Thanks to TSC’s intelligent printer solutions, WEWO is able to minimize manual steps involved in package labeling, while maximizing security and transparency of delivery processes. Now WEWO Schrauben-Befestigungsteile GmbH is able to streamline its daily order and delivery processes.
Janssen said that WEWO’s users are very satisfied with the label printers, citing their ease of operation and simple ribbon replacement.
"We are very happy," Janssen said. "Because of their reliability and robustness, we are planning to deploy another 16 printers from both series. For a medium-size business like ours, it is not always easy to keep up to date, but the improvements we’ve seen since installing the new printers are only achieved through investment.
Benefits:
• Accurate solutions for multiple applications
• Delivery control, security and transparency
• Optimization of business processes
• Minimization of manual steps for employees
TTP-245C Series and TTP-247 Series Features:
The TTP-245C Series features a print speed of up to 152 mm per second, making it ideal for low-to medium-volume printing. It can print three 100 mm x 150 mm package labels every second and offers as standard features Ethernet, USB 2.0, serial and parallel interfaces. "In the beginning we did not realize the benefits of an integrated network adapter, but now we appreciate that we don’t need a print server," Janssen added.
The thermal-transfer labels required for WEWO’s Kanban containers are produced by the TTP-247 Series. While the TTP-247 runs at an impressive 7 inches per second, printing up to 4 inches wide at 203 dpi resolution, the second model in the series, the TTP-345, offers high resolution 300 dpi printing at 5 inches per second. Both models feature a user-friendly clamshell design for easy drop-in media loading, along with a rugged double-wall design that is stronger and more durable than other thermal transfer mechanisms on the market.
Both printers communicate with existing business software, while integrating seamlessly into existing business processes. This is made possible via multiple interfaces and a rich offering of high-performance features – important design characteristics that were instrumental in WEWO’s selection of TSC label printers.

TSC reseller in Germany supplies TTP-245C printer to LTG KG, John Deere for warehouse logistics
MARKET:
Agricultural machinery production

APPLICATION:
Warehouse labeling, picking and packaging, tracking incoming and outgoing goods

MODEL:
TTP-245C

Background:
Working under a contract with LTG KG, Andreas Laubner GmbH, a German supplier of label-printing systems and other automatic identification products, provides thermal printers that are used for warehouse logistics by John Deere, the world’s leading manufacturer of agricultural-equipment.
The printers, which are mounted on warehouse forklifts, are used for labeling incoming and outgoing parts. Made from a variety of materials, the labels must withstand adverse climate conditions and hostile environments contaminated by dust and oil and subject to constant vibration.
Initially, Andreas Laubner´s experts faced a big problem: The long-lasting labels required by LTG KG and John Deere could only be produced via thermal transfer printing, and mobile in-vehicle printers at the time were based on direct thermal printing technology. They needed to find a thermal transfer printer that would meet the contract requirements.
Solution:
After evaluating numerous printers, Andreas Laubner selected the TTP-245C series thermal transfer printer from TSC. Using a standard-size holder, the space-saving high-performance desktop printers are fitted onto forklifts and other vehicles used at the John Deere warehouse.
Magnetic feet on the holders ensure a safe, non-slip grip. To stabilize the printer and protect it from the vibration during everyday operation, a shock absorber plate and special spring are installed. The vibration-tolerant holder also guarantees the connection to the SAP system when the fork lift is on the move.
Using its integrated USB 2.0 interface, the TTP-245C can easily be connected to a fork lift’s communications terminal. The printers also are equipped with a roaming-compatible WLAN print server. Which means the printer is always online, even when in motion, and can receive and execute print jobs without delay.
Andreas Laubner, Managing Director, praised the performance of the TTP-245C and the extremely positive feedback of LTG KG and John Deere. “So far this solution has been unique, and the cost is quickly recovered. Because of the mobility the TTP-245C provides, labels do not have to be printed in advance at the office. They can be printed directly on site.”
Benefits:
• Reduction of costs and errors
• Increased efficiency of mobile printing process
• Easy integration and close interlocking of production processes with SAP • Long-lasting labels resistant to adverse environments
Features:
Durable, fast and affordable, the TTP-245C generates 4-inch-wide labels, tags or receipts at up to 6 ips, offering a price-performance combination that is unmatched by other desktop thermal bar code printers on the market.
Its user-friendly double-walled clamshell design speeds up ribbon and media loading. And with the smallest footprint ever for a TCS 4-inch desktop printer, the TTP-245C series easily fits into cramped workspaces.
The TTP-245C incorporates a 200 MHz 32-bit processor that offers fast “first label out” throughput, with no between-label delays, even when using its internally scalable True Type fonts. Using its standard internal Ethernet port, the TTP-245C can be quickly integrated with any network.

TSC’s TTP-245C helps German trading company reduce consignment and loading error rate
MARKET:
Industry and trade
APPLICATION:
Goods receipt, consignment and shipping

MODEL:
TTP-245C

Background:
German trading company Krapp Eisen found that pallets, cartons, sacks and other loading aids were often forgotten during loading, a problem that was mainly the result of the goods receipt team and the consignment team placing required contents into shipment boxes independently of each other.
To solve the problem, Kapp Eisen decided to implement a new auto ID solution in which loading aids would be marked uniquely with an order label, thus reducing the loading error rate. The company also took steps to increase the legibility of labels, especially its small 55 x 40 mm (2.2 x 1.5 in) labels and its wax-coated labels printed outdoors.
Solution:
After a thorough evaluation, Krapp Eisen selected TSC’s TTP-245C thermal transfer printer for deployment at 10 strategic locations at the company’s central warehouse in Lohne and at outdoor sites. New detachable 102 x 152 mm (4 x 6 in) labels containing a unique barcode, the customer’s address, the name of the person in charge at Krapp Eisen, and other shipment information are now printed on order labels to eliminate loading errors.
Because the TTP-245C can be used for both direct thermal and thermal transfer printing, Krapp Eisen no longer needs to deploy multiple printer models to process different types of labels. “For economic reasons, we wanted to find a single solution for our printing requirements,” said Rainer Nordlohne, manager Logistics/Disposition at Krapp Eisen. “With the flexible TTP-245C, we now print in the direct thermal mode in the warehouse, while outdoors we use a wax-coated thermal transfer ribbon for lasting, razor-sharp labels.”

Korean Logistics company reduces costly inventory losses with help of TSC’s TDP-244 barcode label printer
MARKET:
Logistics
APPLICATION:
Video tracking of goods delivery
MODEL:
TDP-224

Background:
Despite the plant-wide installation of an advanced closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, a Korean logistics company was continuing to have trouble monitoring and tracking its product inventory, resulting in far too many lost items. The losses proved to be very costly, forcing the company to reimburse customers $500,000 to $1 million in damages annually. The ongoing problem was also a source of internal friction, with many staff members refusing to accept responsibility or shifting the blame.
Solution:
To address the problem, the company decided to install a video goods trace (VGT) system that includes TSC’s TDP-244 barcode printer, a digital video recorder (DVR), CCTV camera, personal digital assistant (PDA), and a switch alarm. The TDP-244 is used to print the package labels affixed to each shipping carton. When delivering goods, operators scan the box label with their PDA. The tracking number is then displayed onscreen and stored in the PDA’s database.
To find a missing item, an employee can key its tracking number into the system, which then traces via video capture where it traveled and on which truck. With the aid of tracking numbers and the video trace, the logistics company is able to locate lost goods within 1 second, while quickly pinpointing areas where items went missing. The result: a dramatic reduction in lost items and compensation costs.
Benefits:
• Enhances goods-tracking efficiency
• Reduces customer compensation costs
• Decreases losses from 2 percent to zero percent

For easy loading, the TDP-244 employs a user-friendly double-wall clamshell design with a large 5-inch outside-diameter (OD) center-biased media bay. Top-of-form sensing – by gap, black mark, or notch – is standard and completely adjustable from side to side.
MOBO Druck – Rapid marking process with reliable labels and variable data
MARKET:
Label print shops, retail, industry, deposit system
APPLICATION:
Reliable labels with variable data

MODEL:
MX240

Background:
Every day MOBO Druck receives many print orders in form of variable data records from its clients. Particularly for Germany’s deposit system, enormous information data of a clearing company required needs to be captured as soon and meticulously as possible because it is very important where the bottle deposit is collected and where it is paid. When the used deposit bottles have been returned to the shops and supermarkets, that are not using reverse vending machines, they are transported in big plastic bags to counting centres. These certified organizations can recognize DPG packagings and prepare, for the deposit invoice, an electronic data set for each packaging. To ensure a clear identification throughout the whole supply chain, the plastic bags have to be marked with highly adhesive and durable labels that have to be able to withstand extreme conditions such as moisture, variations in temperature or robust handling by the users.
Solution:
MOBO has developed a highly resistant and self-adhesive label which is divided in 3 segments of varying sizes. The main label that will be fixed at the plastic bag can be read and scanned from both sides. The two smaller segments are used as logistic and control label and ensure the data availability to all participants in the supply chain. All information is printed with TSCs industrial thermal transfer printer MX240. Plenty of memory, including 256 MB SDRAM and 128 MB FLASH enable to manage huge amounts of data and, thanks to thermal transfer printing, to generate durable labels. Sven Herzog, Sales Manager at MOBO, is pleased about the fast printing speed of up to 14 ips and its ease of use. “Compared with the previous printer the printing process now is 2 hours faster by using the MX240.”

An easy solution for label printing: Print without using a computer
MARKET:
Production, Logistics, Point of sales, CarPark & Rental, Access control
APPLICATION:
Labeling of wine bottles, food product identification, jewellery and perfumery labels, printing of carpark or entrance tickets

Background:
Autopost wanted to open new markets and offer easy solutions that improve the logistics at work and increase the number of self-applications on board. Today with the SD Label solution that Autopost developed using TSC printers, the possibilities to print labels without the need to be connected to a computer are abundant.
3 different ways to identify

SpeedyLabel
There’s a new way of working and new markets to explore using easy-to-use label printing solutions from Autopost. The solution works by having all information reside on an SD card which communicates to a printer through dedicated software. Since each SD card is associated to a label or a message, the user just needs to change it to have different layouts, information and label formats.
ClickLabel
Define the layout you want to use and update the information without having to sit at your computer. It’s easy to do with a click of your mouse. The software on board includes the essential information you need: layout, label size, type and font size. With a barcode scanner and list of barcodes, data can be easily registered including variable codes, products, operator identification and even more. All in one click!
RemoteLabel
When processes or shift labor are modified during the day, the rolls of labels that the office preprinted are not valid anymore, only Remote Label can help you. The solution includes an SD card that contains many different labels, a scanner, a printed-sheet of barcodes and software that differentiates what to print which is the secret of the Remote Label solution. The label contents are prepared beforehand using easy-to-use software on a PC. The data is then saved onto an SD card with the program generating a sheet of barcodes associated with the products. By scanning the barcodes, the user can instruct the printer which labels to print as well as the number of labels to print.
Solution:
Thanks to the SD Label solution from Autopost, all a company needs to print labels is a printer, a barcode scanner and an SD card. The solution is very simple: insert the plug and the SD card, turn on the printer and start printing. It only takes 30 seconds to be ready to print professional labels. Anyone can use the solution and no training is necessary to use it. Thanks to its small footprint, the solution can be installed anywhere even if space is limited. With the SD Label solution, companies benefit from an easy-to-use solution - whether you need to print one label or several directly in the field.
